Geena Soliz, MA, MFT

Relational Therapist

I (pronouns: they/them/geena) believe that we all deserve a space that feels nurturing, empowering, creative, affirming and accepting of all parts of us, especially when exploring life challenges and learning about ourselves. Through a relational therapeutic approach, I feel this emerges when we collaboratively create a relationship together; through experiencing relationships that reflect safety and the exploration of relationships, learning and insights naturally unfold. My intention is to emphasize your strengths and resources, offer flexible interventions, and to bring in humor, delight and play whenever possible. I hold a strong conviction that you are the expert of yourself. We will forage together when identifying realistic skills and solutions for your own life and relationship(s). I am supported by therapy frameworks such as somatic integration (Trauma Resiliency Model), psychoeducation rooted in neuroscience, relational theory (The Gottman Method), and transpersonal and ecological therapies.

In my everyday life and as a therapist, I value relationships that are co-created together. Relationships that at their foundation are rooted in affirming identity, mutual consent, anti-oppression, trauma-awareness, relative boundaries, and community care. I prioritize the embodiment of social justice and deconstructing power dynamics. As an ongoing part of learning and unlearning, I am committed to the uplifting and liberation of diverse lived experiences, Indigenous sovereignty, joy, and rest. I acknowledge that Western therapy is part of a colonial system and the theories and approaches it brings with it have been taken from Indigenous knowledge. As a part of my accountability to providing ethical therapy, I regularly attend my own therapy, consult with supervision and other therapists, seek out diverse trainings/trainers, and believe it is my responsibility to seek learning through multiple sources on lived experiences different than my own or topics I am unfamiliar with.

My virus/covid precautions include my family and I masking inside except in houses of friends that we see often. We are no longer masking outdoors unless we are close to a large group of people. I will be masking with every client I see in person and have a HEPA 13 or MERV 13 air filter on in the room. If I am aware that I have been exposed to any virus, and I am not showing symptoms, I will ask that we move to telehealth for upcoming sessions or reschedule for 5-7 days from my exposure. If a covid exposure, I will test every 48 hours within that window. I ask that as my client you please let me know if you are not feeling well, even if it is last minute. If you show up symptomatic, I will ask that we reschedule.

Range of clinical focus:

I am Xicané (pero no hablo español). My family is from Zacatecas and Chihuahua México. However, I was born and raised on Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui homelands (Tucson, Arizona). Now living on Hopewell, Myaamia, Kaskaskia, and Shawnee traditional land (Columbus, Ohio) with my partner, two children, lots of plant bebés, one dog, two geckos, and a frog. I believe that knowledge and wisdom from past generations is relevant today; my ancestral and present culture is an inseparable part of who I am. Some of my favorite ways to experience life are through nature, bodies of water, fictional books, gardening, sculpting clay, baking and cooking, and witnessing wildlife. I occupy a neurodivergent, queer and genderqueer, straight sized, mostly able body that experiences chronic pain. Regardless of my identities, my appearance allows me to benefit from white privilege, as well as experience gender, class, and hetero privilege in the binary system.

Personal

I graduated with a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in 2022, from Sofia University, (formerly, the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology) and hold a  license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Ohio. During my practicum experience, 2021-2022, I worked as a student therapist at Hope Love & Dream and Ohio Marriage & Family Therapy,

In 2018, after nine years of a mixture of community college and university, I received my Bachelor of Science in Molecular Neuroscience from The Ohio State University. During that time, I provided community care mostly to low SES and people of color as a reproductive support person through support of pregnancies, birth, postpartum, loss, and abortions, a supporter of other birth workers, and as a sexual assault hospital advocate.

I am passionate about lifelong learning and value continuing education. I have recently attended the following workshops:

  • Intro Course for Therapists Working with SWers 101, Angie Gunn LCSW CST, Raquel Savage RMFTI, and Melissa Paulino LMSW

  • I have taken many workshops focused on my culture that have not been taught by other therapists or are focused on western therapy but have contributed to my knowledge of who I am as a therapist and how I co-create relationships with my clients.
